( june event ) who's that pokemon?

EVENT: WHO'S THAT POKEMON?

For the residents of Wayward Pines, the 19th is just your typical boring Monday. The sun is shining. The birds are chirping.

Until suddenly, they're not.

That's the first sign. Maybe you don't even notice — you're far too busy with your nine-to-five, or maybe even by poolside, blissfully ignorant to the trouble brewing just out of sight, or to the fact that SPF 15 is basically just water anyway. Or maybe you aren't quite so lucky. You notice the birds have gone silent. You feel the eyes upon you, unseen but still raising goosebumps on the back of your neck.

And then from the woods, that telltale scream.

No, two screams, then three, then five, then more than a dozen. You can't count them, can't figure out which direction they're coming from. It's like they're all around you now. Even above you. Now you spot them on the rooftops — god, they're huge, you can't even fathom how they made it up there unnoticed.

But they're not playing at stealth anymore. One leaps off the roof, a single fluid bound on long thick limbs, and barely lands on the sidewalk for a moment before it lunges at the nearest person — your neighbor mowing his lawn, or maybe the woman carrying that armful of bags out of French's Grocery — long claws slicing through their flesh like a hot knife through butter. Then comes another, and another. Into the streets, the backyards, and the ill-timed pool parties, tearing through every living soul they can find.

By nightfall, the creatures have retreated back into the woods en masse, but anyone foolish enough to wander too far from the safety of their homes runs the risk of being picked off one by one if they're not careful. The 20th and 21st follow a similar pattern; during the day, the Sheriff and a team of volunteers comb through the woods looking for survivors, and during the night, these creatures do much the same.

The morning of the 22nd dawns with the last of the vicious "murder potatoes" (as Linda had hysterically dubbed them on the first day while wielding a butcher's knife with astonishing proficiency) have fallen, and the danger is gone.

For now, anyway. The questions they leave behind, however? Those are here to stay.

Iris was freaking out. These creatures were unlike anything she had ever seen, and considering most of her memories were from a world where monster-like demons were commonplace that was saying something. But she could tell that Blaine needed someone to calm him down right now.

“It’s alright.” She reached for the hand on her arm, squeezing it gently in an attempt to be as reassuring as she could be in the middle of this situation. Hard to be calming when there are creatures trying to rip them into pieces. “I know a place where we can hide, we’ll be safe there. You think you can follow me?”

He felt her hand and his memories temporarily settled. The way she held his hand was like how she would hold it when he was younger. They weren't related by blood, but she was still his sister. The memory calmed him and helped him gain back his easy humor.

"There was a time," Blaine commented, threading their fingers together as if they were kids again, "when you were the one following me."

Iris’s smile was tense, and it didn’t quite reach her eyes. It’d have been hard to smile honestly when they had scary creatures waiting to rip them into pieces if they made ever the smallest of mistakes. But her entire body had sagged in relief because she had seemed to at least get through Blaine enough for him to stop freaking out for now.

“You probably weren’t too thrilled about having a little girl following you everywhere.” She always did that. Gladio, Blaine, Nyx, she just liked to follow wherever adventure seemed to be. But this was completely different.

“Are you hurt? Do you think you can run behind me?”

"Kept me out of trouble," Blaine shrugged. Or at least, certain kinds of trouble.

He shook his head at her question, a fond smile on his lips. He was older but Iris always acted so protective. He knew she wasn't going to leave without him. "I'm fine," he assured her. "Come on, let's make these guys work for it." He squeezed her hand, readying to run.

Iris nodded, a glint of determination reaching her eyes as she looked towards the streets, trying to map the quickest way to the hospital in her head. Which would be easier if her memories were fully back…

“Okay, we’re going to get to the hospital. The closest we get to it the safer we’ll be, I think. Do you think you can follow me?” She looked back at Blaine, giving him a gentle grin. “I promise not to jump over things and people too much.”

He was not too thrilled at the idea of going back to the hospital. But again, he knew Iris wouldn't leave him behind. So he masked his unease with a smile and tugged her along as they started to run.

He would find a way to sneak out later.

She senses his reluctance, but he agreed to go with her. So she figured he just wasn’t all that happy about having to hide or get help. He couldn’t blame him- there was a reason she was out here on the streets doing her best to help out instead of at the safe haven in the hospital. But Blaine is right, there’s no way she’s going to leave behind someone who’s basically like a brother to her.

“Okay, let’s go.” And off she goes, doing her best to listen to try to guess where the invaders may be hiding and ready to attack. And she keeps her promise: there’s no parkour going on here.

Blaine slowed when they reached the hospital entrance. He should probably feel bad about tricking Iris this way. Letting her think he was placidly going along with this and would stay put in the hospital until the creatures were dealt with. But he didn't and, even if she hated him, he would still go along with his idea.

"Iris." He knew damn well she wasn't going to hide in the hospital with him. The moment he was inside, she would run off to find someone else who needed help. That was just how her family worked; they were shields. He flashed her a smile. "Go kick some ass."

With that he turned and headed into the hospital, getting lost in the crowd.
