(june intro) WELCOME TO WAYWARD PINES!

INTRODUCTION LOG

JUNE 1ST - 3RD
AFTER THE ACCIDENT
There was an accident. The details are hazy and obscure, but it's still the first thing you remember. Maybe a car wreck — metal and broken glass everywhere, and the sirens and the screaming. Maybe your bike hit a rock and you careened uncontrollably off a mountain path. Maybe something less mundane, even impossible seems to have happened to you. You can't quite make out the details, not who was at fault or why. Try as you might, the chaos is all you can truly remember.

It's also the last thing you remember from before waking up.

When you open your eyes, the accident is gone, replaced with white sterility. Perhaps somewhat alarming at first, until you blink at your surroundings and realize that you're in a hospital bed. You try to move but are sluggish, covered in a scattering of minor injuries you only vaguely remember receiving, not to mention the possibility of the partially healed remnants of other, seemingly older wounds.

It's a shame you won't be able to tell the difference between the two. Your memories are an indiscernible fog where they're not absent altogether, only a few standing out in your mind with any kind of certainty.

If the room happens to be empty when you wake, it's not for long. Nurses bustle in, taking your vitals and asking your name and anything else you might remember. Don't worry, they tell you. You'll make a full recovery here. Much of what you say (especially anything unusual, anything about monsters or magic or outlandish technology) will earn placating speculation of head trauma from the accident. You'll be told to stay put, not to push yourself, and to wait for the doctor to clear you before you leave.

Then you'll be left alone. Or maybe you'll find yourself visited by loved ones: family, or friends. You've lived here much or all of your life, so of course you have those things. Of course they already remember you being here, and may remember visiting you in the hospital while you were still unconscious.

Either way, the hospital's population is quadruple the usual, and you get the impression the nurses are working themselves ragged just running damage control. You might hear talk around the hospital of other small population spikes over the past few days, though many patients appeared to be well enough to be released the same day, and the same might be said of you. Or at least the staff doesn't seem to be too concerned. You can even leave your room without much fuss, any doctor or nurse that might try to intercept you getting called away almost immediately to deal with something even more pressing.

Of course, it's not so unusual to settle in until you're discharged, either. You may choose to wait for loved ones to come pick you up, even speak to your fellow patients, whether roommates or others wandering the halls. The more enterprising and suspicious might even consider it an opportunity to poke around for a few basic answers.

JUNE 1ST - 4TH
GETTING USED TO HOME AGAIN
However you get there, outside the birds sing a joyful song, and though the air is just a bit crisp, the sky's as sunny as you've ever seen it. It's bright enough to make you squint for a moment before you feast your eyes on the quaint little mountain town of Wayward Pines, though that might just be some sort of side effect from your accident. Trees line the street at regular intervals, carefully manicured and slightly waterlogged from the recent flood. Cars cruise by at a safe and respectable speed. Fellow pedestrians spare you glances, some wary, others concerned or just friendly. It probably depends on how clothed you were when you left the hospital.

This isn't even the picturesque city center, though a colorful nearby sign reads "Main Street" with an arrow pointing due south, followed in smaller font by a list of businesses you don't recognize (could be a good direction to head in, though — maybe it'll jog your memory), and one that you might: Wayward Pines Sheriff's Department. You've likely caught wind by now that any clothing or other items you had on you at the time of your accident are being held by the Sheriff until you're well enough to claim them. Not to mention the keys to your home, kept locked and safe at the station for you. That should probably be your next stop, though if anything's missing in what they hand over you'd be the last to know.

It's time to get home, to recover from your ordeal and try to sort through your memories. Do you remember this house, the pictures of family on the walls and how to navigate to the bathroom in the middle of the night? Maybe it's easier with loved ones living with you, helping you get settled, or maybe you're on your own. Either way, over the next few days it's a good idea to try to remember your routines, to get out and finally visit Main Street if you haven't already. Maybe you even remembered that you work in one of the more familiar sounding shops, or elsewhere in town. Makes sense they'd give you some time off to recover and get reacclimated to your life here, but eventually you should probably get back to work. You haven't seen your co-workers in a few days, and besides, you have to be able to put bread on the table.

JUNE 5TH
GLUG GLUG'S GRAND OPENING!

Town hall is listening, and town hall has heard you loud and clear (their surveillance equipment is of the highest quality, after all). While there appears to have been some... clerical issues and red tape concerning the highest voted name, when the fifth rolls around the newly completed and lovingly anointed Glug Glug's opens its doors to the public for the official grand opening!

For an old diner, this place has undergone an amazing transformation, with a ground, second, and basement floor all open to the public and offering a wide variety of entertainment options within:

The ground floor features a long bar along one wall where one can order coffee, tea, soda, hot chocolate, whatever your little caffeinated heart desires, as well as alcoholic drinks 10% or under — provided you can show some form of ID, of course. Linda, perched at the bar with a mimosa in hand, will tell anyone who listens that she voted for Pubby McPubface, but honestly, who's listening to Linda, anyway? Pastries and small appetizers are also available at half price for the special event, and card and board games make inviting and colorful centerpieces on the tables scattered around the room (there are classics like Monopoly and the rousing game of Jenga in the corner, amongst less common fare you may not have played before, like Cards Against Humanity and Settlers of Catan).

A lounge on the second floor overlooks the ground floor and features plush couches and chairs, ambient lighting and a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere to contrast with the low buzz of activity below. A small balcony out back provides a peaceful, quiet view of some of the very pines after which our town was named.

The basement is where anyone interested will find music, dance, billiards and booze. A small stage on one end features regular local live performances, with a vast stretch of the room devoted to a dance floor and just a few private booths set into the wall around the edges. The bar down here serves the harder stuff to those that can prove they're old enough to be handling it, and one corner of the room is devoted to a billiards table and two large pinball machines.

Technically the basement level is open to all ages, but getting down there requires showing your ID and getting your hand stamped, and anyone under 16 is highly encouraged to be accompanied by an adult. And, of course, anyone caught sneaking drinks to minors will be summarily kicked out, as well as reported to Sheriff Griffith for a good talking to about, you know, civic duty and such. It's honestly not worth it, you know how he goes on.

Today is supposed to be a party after all, let's not spoil it just yet.

MOD NOTES

Welcome to our fifth mingle log for newbies and oldbies alike!

This log is meant to cover characters' first five days in Wayward Pines. Characters for this round will appear staggered in the hospital between the 1st and the 3rd, and a CR building event will occur on the 5th, after everyone has had a suitable amount of time to get settled in town. For the most part, only the five memories detailed in your character's application are remembered throughout the duration of this log, although their false Wayward Pines memories may also begin to surface (in those who've opted to utilize this mechanic) as the week wears on. These memories, as noted in the FAQ, feel very real and are accompanied by as much emotion or sentiment as a real memory would be.

PLEASE INCLUDE IN SUBJECT LINE: Character Name, date, location, and Open or Closed, to help keep things organized and make your character easy to find.

If you have any questions regarding this intro log, feel free to ask them on the FAQ or the relevant plurk.

[ oh wow, jyn made a princess laugh and leia looks so buoyant afterwards, like the weight of their lives has briefly lifted. it's odd, hearing "the early days of the rebellion" and knowing that those were still after jyn's days, but she likes hearing leia talk about something almost innocent. ]

My Papa loved it, plain milk. [ to the point that it was part of the cargo that bodhi carried to eadu. ] I had it fermented once when Saw was out and he'd left the youngest of us to wait. [ when the cat is away, the mice will play. ] It wasn't... I don't think I even liked it, but it was home.

[ and even through she had a hand in training half of those recruits she was drinking with it was one of the few times she felt at home with any of the partisans outside of saw. ]

[Leia had never met Saw, but of course she had heard of him, and heard of his legends and unorthodox methods. Her father had disapproved of them, which meant at the time that Leia had disapproved as well, but now that she had reached an age that Bail Organa had never been allowed to, Leia could see the benefit in it. Oh, not so much that the resistance was using those tactics yet, but Leia remembered them, and almost seemed to keep them in reserve.

But she just smiled at the mention of him, and of the milk that had brought young recruits together. Memories were powerful things, Leia knew, and if she closed her eyes she could almost picture the taste of Alderaan wine on her tongue, the sweetness of the berries and the flowers that went into it, and how she had stolen a glass at some official function or another. Kids will be kids, even if they happen to be tom boy princesses who normally should know better.

A curiosity came over her, and Leia leaned forward slightly.
]

What was he like?

Saw?

[ grief clouds behind jyn's eyes and both hands circle her beer, nails drumming against the glass. ]

He was relentless. He took me in when my mother died, when my father... he protected me and taught me to protect myself. [ one hand leaves her beer to pulls her necklace free, fingering the crystal idly. she knows where leia organa is from, she knows what happened to bail organa and alderaan with the weapon that her father helped create. ] My father worked for the Empire, Saw was very careful to make sure that no one knew who I was, he did everything he could to protect me. [ including murdering people that sought to out her to the empire. the necklace drops and her hand moves back to the beer, taking a swig before it settles back against the table. ]

His methods weren't exactly... good, but he did what had to be done when no one else would. People flocked to him. We had groups of rebels come to talk with him and loads of them would just stay. Admittedly, their leaders were not particularly pleased with this but. [ anger flares in her green eyes, but it doesn't manage to push away the majority of the lingering sadness of losing saw. FUCK YOU A LOT, REECE. ]

He was a hero, he just wasn't the hero a lot of people wanted. Steela was the reason he did everything, his sister, but when she died all the hope that he had died with her.

[ grief calls to grief and Leia organa knows grief better than most. Deep in her core there was a black ball of grief, one that had begun when she was young and could remember the sadness of her mother and then again when she had seen things on planets that they were trying to save from the empire

But the biggest ball of grief was called family and it contained all of Alderaan within it. She'd lost her entire world to the empire and Vader there. When things had happened with Ben (though the memory of what it was that he had don was still hidden away in the back of her mind) had been added there as well even without her knowing. Leia lost the people she cared about and she knew it. Maybe that was the true Skywalker curse: in the end you were always alone.

Being always alone had taught Leia that maybe Saw had been right about some things even though her father might not have agreed. Oh, she wasn't quite there at the ends justifying the means but she was more so than she had been prior. The first order had seen to that.

She also understood doing everything for family, even if your family was that blank space in your chest. Without even thinking about it, Leia raised her glass.

[ jyn's never heard it put quite so perfectly. saw was a thorn in the alliance's side, but he was necessary because he was such an enemy of the empire. she lifts her beer, taking a long pull, trying to pack away the memories of saw. ]

Cassian says there is a veterans group, where everyone gets together and drinks. [ jyn would rather be impaled, but she assumes she's going to be dragged to it eventually and leia has memories of this place, maybe she knows about it already. ]

[Leia takes a long pull of her drink and she thinks about other not obvious heroes in her life. She thinks of Han and she thinks of Lando and above all she thinks of her brother when he was nothing but a kid from a farm who turned out to be a hero.

The hero that the rebellion probably didn't want but that it definitely needed. She herself had felt that after her father died and she had attempted to take his place. And then even more when she did.

The mention of a veterans group made her snort.
]

I'm not one to talk about my feelings, Jyn. And how do you explain a vice-principal to a general without talking about the past.

[they were breaking rules all over and Leia didn't really care. But doing it officially might be a problem.]

[personal profile] realists 2017-07-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ jyn has been breaking rules since day one, but they were practically asking for it, not giving her memories of the town to fall back on. all she does remember is home. ]

Do I look like someone that talks about feelings?

[ she looks like someone who beats feelings up and bounces before they can get back up. there's a beat where her shoulders lift in a shrug. ]

I think the alcohol is free.

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-07-08 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[The youthful energy and the look on Jyn's face at the mention of feelings makes Leia laugh. She can't help it. It's not the sort of laugh that one would take as mean; it's more delighted than anything else. Jyn reminds Leia of herself more and more each time the two of them talk. It's almost a little unsettling when it comes down to it. Almost. Knowing that if they had met before everything that they would have been friends strikes Leia not for the first time, and it's one of the few things that being in this place makes her happy about.

Not that she planned on thanking those bastards who did it to them any time soon, of course. But Jyn was certainly better than the alternative.
]

I am a fan of drinking for free. [The words are mused over the top of a nearly empty drink; it wasn't a lot but it was better than nothing.]

Maybe I should come.

[personal profile] realists 2017-07-13 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been. [ she's only heard in passing, but it was the free booze that swayed her. not that cassian lets her pay for much. regardless, the "i've never been" is silently followed by "i'll go if you go". solidarity or strength in numbers or something like that. it's not just because jyn enjoys the princess' company.

it is. ]

But I'm not sure I'll be spending a lot of time here. Too many people.

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-07-19 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Leia seemed to consider this for a moment, and she nods before she takes another sip of her drink. She understood how too many people in the same room with the same experiences could be entirely overwhelming for anyone. Especially if they had experiences with war and rebellion and whatever the rest of them had done to be in the group, whatever memories they'd had that made them need something like that.

Not that she thought people necessarily needed something like that; she and Jyn probably didn't. But there was something about groups:
]

It could be a good place to find like-minded people. Even if there are a lot of them.

[Recruitment value, that's what these things had. And there was even more recruitment value in the fact that they already at least had memories of how to fight.]

Hmm. [ jyn hums, thoughtful, downing the rest of her beer before she points the bottle at leia. ] That's why you're the senator.

[ general. whatever! regardless it makes jyn think of cassian, always calculating, always planning, without even thinking but like it was a habit so ingrained it was the only way they knew how to do things. warmth and affection blossoms in her chest, thinking about them both, and a rare smile softens her features, however small the smile may be. ]
oldladyleia: (4)

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-07-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Leia laughs, and there's a slightly bitter note in it when she does it. No, she's not a Senator anymore, and the reasoning is something that eludes her still, but she knows that it was something bad. That leaving in the way that she had hurt the New Republic and that the rise of the First Order was something that was nearly entirely on her shoulders.

Thankfully, her shoulders were less frail than they actually looked.

But she returns Jyn's smile, and finishes her own drink and rises to her feet.
]

Speaking of free drinks, I'll go grab us another round. You sticking with beer or do you want something else?

[personal profile] realists 2017-07-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Beer's good.

[ she's not going to be adventurous in public, even if she trusts leia to pick out something good. beer is just fine for now, probably forever. her mouth flickers up briefly in a small smile. ]

Thanks.
