[OPEN] you can swing it, you can groove it, you can really start to move it at the hop

Who: Magnus bane ([personal profile] appetitive), Alec Lightwood ([personal profile] angelic_archer), & YOU!
Where: The Vinyl Destination music store
When: night of May 14th
What: An open-invitation party to celebrate the opening of the store
Warnings: Please tag accordingly in your threads!

I. Rock Around The Clock
Being that this party is for the opening of a music store, it makes sense that the main feature of the night is a dance floor! Music from throughout the 1950s will be playing, both in the store itself as well as the large loft above that has been converted into a miniature sockhop for everyone in attendence. Records and streamers hang from the ceilings and there is a lot of black, white, and pink to be seen. There's also a small stage in one corner set up for anyone brave enough to pick up one of the guitars that usually adorn the shop downstairs, as well as several microphone stands that are hooked up to a karaoke machine. Come in and dance the night away! Anyone wearing era-appropriate attire will random prizes.
II. All Shook Up
Being that this is a Magnus party, there is a wide range of cocktails to sample being made at the open bar. Most of them are were what was popular at the time—Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, the classic Gin & Tonic—but requests for specialty drinks are being taken as well. There are also, in true 50s style, milkshakes that are creamy enough to tempt even those who would usually try to resist. But there's a twist: they're alcoholic. None will be served to minors, but it's totally possible that the adults won't realized their delicious treats are spiked until after they've had their second (or third) glass. Also, though the upper loft is well-lit for dancing, the first-floor store has plenty of dark corners for making bad decisions. So grab your honey, grab a drink, and enjoy the night together.
III. Tutti Frutti
Half of the upper loft is dedicated to refreshments as well as boasting furniture looks like it was ripped from a diner—you guessed it, chrome with red vinyl upholstery. A table along one wall is ladden with miniature versions of popular diner food—cheeseburgers, hot dogs, even tuna melts—as well as french fries and plenty of other finger food. And, because this is the 1950s, there's jello. Lots of jello. So much jello that it's insane, how can anyone love jello this much? Luckily, if you don't go ape over gelatine-based desserts, there are also record-shaped cookies and non-alcoholic milkshakes for the kiddies. Seeing as this is a small town with families, and thus minors, there are plenty of drink options for those who aren't yet old enough to drink or who prefer not to.
IV. La Bamba
No invite is necessary, IC or OOC, for anyone who'd like to jump in and join the party! It's safe to assume that flyers have been up around town to announce the time and place. Hopefully, with enough people in attendance throughout the night, there's plenty of chances to make friends (or maybe enemies). Feel free to choose your own adventure, and don't worry about boundaries—if it doesn't break the game, it won't break this party post! But be aware that your hosts, one of whom is a warlock and the other a demon hunter, won't stand for any altercations inside the store. Instead, maybe take it outside if the mood or your ex-girlfriend strike you. If you'd like to assume that you're helping run the party—bartending, music playing, etc—go nuts and have fun!

"I do listen to the two of you." Alec didn't understand most of the discussions about color choices and fashion but that didn't mean he didn't pay attention. The subjects just weren't ones he could put into a context that he used on a daily basis. "I wouldn't mind if you tried making it sometime if it had fruit in it. You'll have to be careful with pineapple." It was something he'd seen on one of the few boxes that Magnus had brought home before he'd start using magic to make snacks.

"He's the one who can give her grandchildren." As he spoke, he studied his sister, trying to figure out why she was unhappy with Maryse. The two of them had always been close. It was Robert that she'd been angry with when they were in New York. "I thought you and Maryse were doing okay other than her disapproving of - " There'd been a boy. Alec could remember his face and that he owned him a debt that could never be repaid but no matter how much he struggled, he couldn't recall the vampire's name.

Scrunching up his nose at Izzy, he refused to agree to that particular cooking disaster. "They're good but not in soup. Maybe if you were trying something like kung pao chicken it would work." Wait... was he giving Izzy ideas about cooking? This could be dangerous. The grimace turned to a look of horror over the idea of tuna and Jell-O. "No. You are officially banned from the kitchen if you're going to make that."

Alec wasn't certain why he thought Magnus would eventually be unhappy with him. It was an underlying sense of dread that had surfaced occasionally after mentioning the opera to Clary. There was no reason for it. It was obvious every time Magnus looked at him that he loved him, but the word 'trivial' kept eroding at his confidence at strange moments. "He has friends here but it's not the same as New York. What if I'm not enough, Izzy?" he asked softly, finally saying the thought aloud.

"We'll turn you to the side of fashion, form, and decoration sooner than we thought, then." Izzy winks, only joking about that. She knows that he's probing a point. And decoration and style...they're not Alec's thing and that's okay...even if it is her's...and Magnus' too. Taking another bite of her jello, Izzy nods a bit. "I can give it a shot. Maybe I'll experiment with a lot of fruit or something."

Danger, Alec Lightwood, your sister wanting to experiment in any form with fod...is probably a bad idea. And a part of her is even aware of that fact as she says it. Yet it still comes out with a confident smile on her face, all the same. She really doesn'tw ant to talk about their mother. "Disapproving of everything?" Izzy suggests before giving a purposeful shrug. "Sure, we're fine other than that." Sarcasm. See, she can utilize it too?

Shaking that off because it's easier to not talk about her mother than to focus on the subject of the woman for very long, Izzy rolls her eyes. "Says you. You need to keep an open mind about food, just like you should fashion, Alec....and I wasn't serious about the tuna fish thing. I don't want to make my favorite brother-in-law mad so early on." She teases easily. Not to mention she wouldn't subject Alec to that either, but, she's not saying it that way. Alec's the one that gets teased, sorry big bro!

Scrunching her eyebrows a bit, Izzy can't help the decisive shake of her head. "Alec, he's already finding his way here. He's an outgoing person....socially he'll manage what he needs and romantically....you're enough. He wouldn't be here with you now, wouldn't have married you either, if you weren't enough for him. You've just got to realize that you are." Izzy lifts her hand from his arm and forms a fist, playfully, and gives her brother a very light tap in the same arm. "Don't doubt yourself, or what you have, because you do have something special. Something that I hope I can find one day." Izzy offers, trying to do her best to reassure her older brother.

"I'm not that bad!" As he protested, he thought of another party, one where he'd been wearing a brown sweater, unhappy that it had faded from his usual black. Another memory quickly followed of an expensive, tailored suit and Magnus wearing a silk scarf and gloves. Vienna.

That wasn't something he wanted to consider while they were at a party. "And I do own a nice suit. Magnus picked it out. Some designer that I can't remember." Even if he wasn't recovering from amnesia, Alec doubted that he'd remember the name.

"No." Why would Maryse disapprove of Izzy. She had always been their mother's favorite. "She doesn't like your boyfriend, but she spends more time with you than the rest of us." Looking around to see if anyone would overhear, he lowered his voice so only Izzy would hear. "Did the two of you have a fight? Is that why you moved here?" If it was, he was sure they could clear it up. Maryse never stayed angry with Izzy for long. Now if the fight had been with their father. "I thought it was Robert you were angry with."

Still giving his sister a confused look, he tried not to react to the idea of tuna experiments. "No. Please help me keep him sane as long as possible." Which would be a very long time...

"I don't want to just be enough." That's all I've ever been to everyone except Jace... Frowning at the thought, he tried to figure out where that had come from. At times their parents were disappointed in him, but Izzy didn't act like he was a disappointment. At least not now. Maybe in the past she and Max...

Forcing a smile, he tried to ignore his doubts while rubbing the spot Izzy had punched. "I just want him to be happy with me and be happy here." It'd work out. He had to believe that but sometimes he needed to tell Izzy about his worries just like he had when he'd realized he wasn't interested in girls the way Jace was. "I thought you found someone."

"You're not." Izzy agrees, her grin growing a bit like the cat that ate the canary. She's practically bursting to finish that thought, but she lets her brother speak, laughing as he uses a suit that his husband picked him out for example. So, she nods. He's making the point in her head for her there, after all. "You let Magnus and I dress you and you could never go wrong with our senses of fashion." Izzy pats her brother's arm, not expecting the turn of conversation.

She's really not sure what her brother is thinking, though. Maryse more than didn't like her boyfriend. Though, Izzy still can't remember all of the details with an easy recall, she remembers the fact that her mother didn't approve. That disapproval was a part of the reason that she had to get out of there. "I don't think lectures about my decisions being mistakes really count as quality time, Alec." Izzy speaks lightly, being sure that her voice is low to match Alec's. "We've had more than one fight, but she's part of the reason that I moved. Not all, but part, not dad, though." Izzy says, confusion on her face.

Where did he get the idea that she was mad at their dad?

At least he isn't confused about Magnus. "I'll do what I can, for now." Izzy would wink, butn the lingering confusion does have her avoiding it...just a litle bit. Plus, there's the fact that her comment isn't quite...landing the way she meant. "Alec, when I say you're enough I don't mean that you're just enough." Izzy gives her brother a look and then nods. "He is happy here, you make him happy. Whrever you are." Izzy smiles and then gives her brother a shrug because she hasn't found anybody serious, really. "Nope, nobody serious...yet."

There that wink is. She can't Alec think that she's really concerned or not confident about eventually finding that herself.
angelic_archer: (Um... no)

The discussion on fashion is forgotten as Alec tried to figure out why Izzy remembered things differently than he did. He knew that she'd been furious with Robert and Maryse had been grooming her to be... Alec wasn't sure what since they all knew that Jace was the one that the Clave approved of. Izzy had always been close to their mother. She was the first one to know about the affair. "Maybe that started after I left?" It was the only way it made sense.

"You were mad at Robert because of how he treated me after I came out." And how he'd treated Alec when he was younger, but that wasn't something they needed to get into. Discussing Robert's attempts to make sure his son wasn't gay wasn't the best party conversation. "When you found out what he said to me, you quit talking to him." There was more to it than that. Robert had refused to stay with them in New York, but the comments had been one of the main reasons Izzy had snapped.

"I'll always be grateful for your efforts," he teased, hoping to lighten the mood when he still felt a sense of dread. Something heavy and inescapable. "I don't know why, but I keep thinking something bad will happen that will tear us apart." Somehow it was related to Vienna but Alec wasn't sure how.

"I'm sure you were dating someone, Iz. I kept glaring at him but he wouldn't go away."

Furrowing her eyebrows, Izzy tries to think. Had her issues with Maryse started before or after Alec had left? The anaswer that came to mind was that it had started before. Izzy was always confident, even when she didn't feel certainty, but in this case she could feel the certainty backing it up. She knew that the trial and their mother were major reasons that she had decided to make the trek from New York to Wayward Pines. How did Alec not know that?

The answer, actually, came easy. Izzy didn't like to worry Alec. There was some truth, though, in Alec's statement about his coming out. "You're right, I am angry with him about that." She remains vague, hoping to skirt the rules about talking about the past. Adding on, though, Izzy sounds a little less confident. "But I don't remember what he said now. And I know that issues with Maryse started before you left. I must have just...kept them to myself until now, apparently." Izzy gives a light shrug in a bit of an 'oops', but it feels much more...sereious than that. However, she doesn't want to...alarm anyone, least of all anyone that might turn them in for the speaking of the past thing.

"You better, I'm amazing and you should never take me for granted." Izzy winks, playfully. The lighter conversation seems a much safer topic. Softening, though, Izzy feels sympathy for her older brother. "Maybe it's related to our parents? I mean, they're not exactly beacons of hope for relationships. You two are still in the honeymoon period, you haven't been married that long. You shouldn't be so focused on that as keeping your relationship going and working." She knows she has a point there, but then again, Izzy doesn't know where this is coming from, really, for Alec.

"Maybe your glare was finally sucessful?" It's a joke, but Izzy doesn't look convinced by that. The fact of the matter is that she doesn't remember a serious relationship. "Either way, I'm single now."

"I didn't want you to get in the middle of that. I didn't want you to fight with them." It wasn't quite an apology, but it felt like saying 'I'm sorry' meant he was sorry for finally being himself. He knew that Izzy wouldn't want that. She'd always wanted him to stop hiding. She'd encouraged him to go out with Magnus. "What he said doesn't matter. It's over and we're here." That he truly believed. "I just hope that someday you can fix things with them." Alec wasn't sure he was ready for accepting their father's apology even if Magnus thought that he would eventually.

At the mention of their parents' relationship, Alec was grateful that he hadn't been eating or drinking anything or he might have choked or garbled out some stupid sound that would make everyone look at them. Instead he stared at Izzy, unable to hide his surprise at how casual she was about the divorce. He hadn't expected her to accept the change so quickly. "No, they're not. Maybe that's why I keep worrying that Magnus will get bored." Like Robert had...

"If me glaring ran him off, he wasn't good enough for you." No one would be good enough for Izzy. He'd always think that since he was her big brother but he thought he might have been softening toward what's-his-name. "Probably not for long. If I could find someone, then someone as amazing as you will find someone soon. If you want to."

Izzy levels her older brother with a look, unable to help herself. He knows her. He's known her for the entirety of her life; he knows that if there's one person that is on his side, even in this situation, it's her. So, he shouldn't be surprised that she's in the middle of this even if not completely so. "Alec, you know me. I won't be fixing anything until things are being fixed with you." Though, she's not exacture sure that the issues with Maryse will be so easy to just move passed, considering the disapproval that she's always felt from her mother.

Alec and Jace get hugs, after all, she's always gotten the cold shoulder.

"But we are here and I'm pretty happy with the turnout, personally. I love the way this place looks and everything." Izzy informs her brother, just as an aside. Unfortunately, she can see the face he's got going right now. And she knows that she's managed to shock him. She can't help that she says what she thinks. "I think you need to get them out of your mind because Magnus and you are vastly different...in basically every way I can come up with." Izzy gives her brother a smile.

She can't help but do what she can to reassure her brother, a bit of a scoff escaping her mouth. "I don't know if that's all that ran him off, but...fair point." She smiles and then rolls her eyes, playfully, at her brother. She's not quite as hopeful about her own love life as she likes to pretend, but she does give a nod. "That's what I keep telling myself. And I'm on the prowl." A joke, obviously! "So if you see anybody who looks single, well dressed, and interesting point them my way." She sticks her tongue out at her brother, knowing that is not going to be happening, but she can't help the tease before moving to get rid of her jello dish and utensil.

"You've mingled, Mr. Proprieter, right?"

"I know." He did. Izzy had been the one person who supported him during his many crises about his sexuality and his fears about their parents disowning him for one reason or another. Jace would have helped, but Alec had been too afraid to tell him the truth to ever get that kind of help from his best friend. "That doesn't mean I like that the three of you are at odds." He almost apologized for being the cause of that fighting, but it wasn't his fault. Maryse and Robert needed to accept who he was.

"It is a good turnout and Magnus did an amazing job with decorating." Looking over at the Jell-O, he quirked an eyebrow up at that detail. That might have been a little too faithful to the era. "People seem interested in the shop." And Magnus seemed interested in throwing more parties which would help with those worries about boredom.

Instead of commenting on their parents' marriage, Alec made a non-committal sound. Izzy might be accepting the divorce but that didn't mean it was a good time to talk about it. "Something else did, but I'm not sure what. It was something serious." But every time Alec tried to focus on the reason or his name, the details slipped away. "I don't think you cared about well-dressed before." Stealing a bite of Jell-O before she threw it away, he arched an eyebrow at his little sister. "Isn't having your gay brother set you up like one of those weird, Mundane cliches?" Rolling his eyes, he pretended to be annoyed, but the expression quickly changed to a smile. "Yes, I mingled. Magnus taught me how to deal with parties."

Izzy chooses to shrug off the fact that Alec doesn't like her being at odds with their parents. Unfortunately, there's nothing that he can do to change the way that things are. She's not going to be able to chance her stance...not with the treatment of Alec and definitely not with the issues she and her mother have developed outside of that. It's not up to him, even if Alec would rather be able to fix things himself. It's up to Robert and Maryse.

"Well, you did marry into impeccable tastes all around." Izzy teases. "And you put him right into his element here." Izzy gives a gesture around them, thinking that Magnus might even be a little better than her at whipping a party together. Though, she can't be that far behind. It might be pride saying that, though. "With all of this to draw them in, plus the music it was bound to happen." Izzy replies confidently. "Interest, and business, is good."

She's going to focus on that good, for now.

Lifting her shoulders in a bit of a shrug, Izzy can't really comment on the what. Or the severity, truth be told. "Maybe you just liked him more than you let on and it's actually your way of showing disappointment." Another tease. Meliorn--the name hits her quickly--wasn't her choice to break up with, but she knows she did the right thing....even if the name and few details are what hit her at the moment. Not missing a beat, and filing that back for later she lets out a bit of a laugh. "Maybe I'm trying something new, considering how lucky you got with Magnus, hm? And what's bad about cliches...sometimes they have their purposes!" Izzy says before sticking her tongue out at her brother, putting it away a moment later.

"I'm just checking. It's a requirement for you to talk to everyone possible, considering this is basically a networking opportunity."
