(may intro) WELCOME TO WAYWARD PINES!

INTRODUCTION LOG

MAY 1ST - 3RD
AFTER THE ACCIDENT
There was an accident. The details are hazy and obscure, but it's still the first thing you remember. Maybe a car wreck — metal and broken glass everywhere, and the sirens and the screaming. Maybe your bike hit a rock and you careened uncontrollably off a mountain path. Maybe something less mundane, even impossible seems to have happened to you. You can't quite make out the details, not who was at fault or why. Try as you might, the chaos is all you can truly remember.

It's also the last thing you remember from before waking up.

When you open your eyes, the accident is gone, replaced with white sterility. Perhaps somewhat alarming at first, until you blink at your surroundings and realize that you're in a hospital bed. You try to move but are sluggish, covered in a scattering of minor injuries you only vaguely remember receiving, not to mention the possibility of the partially healed remnants of other, seemingly older wounds.

It's a shame you won't be able to tell the difference between the two. Your memories are an indiscernible fog where they're not absent altogether, only a few standing out in your mind with any kind of certainty.

If the room happens to be empty when you wake, it's not for long. Nurses bustle in, taking your vitals and asking your name and anything else you might remember. Don't worry, they tell you. You'll make a full recovery here. Much of what you say (especially anything unusual, anything about monsters or magic or outlandish technology) will earn placating speculation of head trauma from the accident. You'll be told to stay put, not to push yourself, and to wait for the doctor to clear you before you leave.

Then you'll be left alone. Or maybe you'll find yourself visited by loved ones: family, or friends. You've lived here much or all of your life, so of course you have those things. Of course they already remember you being here, and may remember visiting you in the hospital while you were still unconscious.

Either way, the hospital's population is quadruple the usual, and you get the impression the nurses are working themselves ragged just running damage control. You might hear talk around the hospital of other small population spikes over the past few days, though many patients appeared to be well enough to be released the same day, and the same might be said of you. Or at least the staff doesn't seem to be too concerned. You can even leave your room without much fuss, any doctor or nurse that might try to intercept you getting called away almost immediately to deal with something even more pressing.

Of course, it's not so unusual to settle in until you're discharged, either. You may choose to wait for loved ones to come pick you up, even speak to your fellow patients, whether roommates or others wandering the halls. The more enterprising and suspicious might even consider it an opportunity to poke around for a few basic answers.

MAY 1ST - 4TH
GETTING USED TO HOME AGAIN
However you get there, outside the birds sing a joyful song, and though the air is just a bit crisp, the sky's as sunny as you've ever seen it. It's bright enough to make you squint for a moment before you feast your eyes on the quaint little mountain town of Wayward Pines, though that might just be some sort of side effect from your accident. Trees line the street at regular intervals, carefully manicured and slightly waterlogged from the recent flood. Cars cruise by at a safe and respectable speed. Fellow pedestrians spare you glances, some wary, others concerned or just friendly. It probably depends on how clothed you were when you left the hospital.

This isn't even the picturesque city center, though a colorful nearby sign reads "Main Street" with an arrow pointing due south, followed in smaller font by a list of businesses you don't recognize (could be a good direction to head in, though — maybe it'll jog your memory), and one that you might: Wayward Pines Sheriff's Department. You've likely caught wind by now that any clothing or other items you had on you at the time of your accident are being held by the Sheriff until you're well enough to claim them. Not to mention the keys to your home, kept locked and safe at the station for you. That should probably be your next stop, though if anything's missing in what they hand over you'd be the last to know.

It's time to get home, to recover from your ordeal and try to sort through your memories. Do you remember this house, the pictures of family on the walls and how to navigate to the bathroom in the middle of the night? Maybe it's easier with loved ones living with you, helping you get settled, or maybe you're on your own. Either way, over the next few days it's a good idea to try to remember your routines, to get out and finally visit Main Street if you haven't already. Maybe you even remembered that you work in one of the more familiar sounding shops, or elsewhere in town. Makes sense they'd give you some time off to recover and get reacclimated to your life here, but eventually you should probably get back to work. You haven't seen your co-workers in a few days, and besides, you have to be able to put bread on the table.

Or at the very least some of the delicious treats at the school bake sale you're seeing flyers for all over town!

MAY 5TH
ANNUAL BAKE SALE, PRESENTED BY THE PTA!

It's that time of year again. The time when everyone digs into their wallet, ignores their diet, and spends a little time supporting the local school bake fair. You know, for the good of the children. Or, in this particular case, the hospital. There's no denying the hospital has had a hard time of it lately, between the steady influx of accident victims at the start of each month and the recent outbreak scare, and the Wayward Pines Academy PTA has come up with the perfect solution to show their support to the hard working hospital staff by vowing to donate half of the proceeds for the sale today. Maybe the hospital can see about finally getting the staff breakroom a decent coffee machine!

And it doesn't hurt that Linda's Blondie recipe is honestly to die for. The PTA has pulled out all the stops this year in the hopes of encouraging a good community turn out, posters advertising the sale plastering every street corner and flyers stuffed into every mailbox for a solid week leading up to the event, and today is finally the day.

There's at least two dozen different tables set up with all manner of delectable treats, even one or two offering vegan alternatives for those inclined. Not to mention a few others catering to some of the townspeople's more... unique palates.

Maybe you've got your own table set up with your wares, or were simply lured to the park today by the appetizing scents wafting through the air. Either way it seems like the whole town has come out to show their support today, and why wouldn't they? Children are our future, after all. Or maybe it's just Linda's Blondie recipe.

Yeah, that's probably it.

MOD NOTES

Welcome to our fourth mingle log for newbies and oldbies alike!

This log is meant to cover characters' first five days in Wayward Pines. Characters for this round will appear staggered in the hospital between the 1st and the 3rd, and a CR building event will occur on the 5th, after everyone has had a suitable amount of time to get settled in town. For the most part, only the five memories detailed in your character's application are remembered throughout the duration of this log, although their false Wayward Pines memories may also begin to surface (in those who've opted to utilize this mechanic) as the week wears on. These memories, as noted in the FAQ, feel very real and are accompanied by as much emotion or sentiment as a real memory would be.

PLEASE INCLUDE IN SUBJECT LINE: Character Name, date, location, and Open or Closed, to help keep things organized and make your character easy to find.

If you have any questions regarding this intro log, feel free to ask them on the FAQ or the relevant plurk.

I'm reassuring you, not the other way around. [Izzy points out, playfully before laughing and giving a firm shake of her head.] No potions, I swear....

[Somehow talking about potions doesn't feel too out of place, but she still can't quite help but furrow her brow thinking about it. Does it have something to do with being a shadowhunter, or something adjacent to that?] Why does he make potions again?

[Izzy speaks casually before giving a gesture to wave off Alec's certainty that he's supposed to worry about her. She doesn't want to cause him any undue stress. He's a newlywed; he's supposed to be happy an in the newlywed honeymoon phase, after all--just like she told Damon.] They let me out, Alec. If it were anything that serious I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have let me walk out of the hospital. It's probably just in the healing process now or I've over-exerted it. You're supposed to be happy and in the honeymoon phase, not worrying about me.

Well, Jace's opinion can't count unless he's here to give it. And he isn't. So, we'll go with mine. [Izzy winks, confidently, a bit of a laugh bubbling up. She likes Magnus, and that's all that really matters, considering.

She's pretty glad that she managed to run into him--of her brother and his husband she really remembered her brother better than Magnus. Now, though, the reminder has kind of helped. Seeing him, really.]
Ooooooh, see, now that almost makes up for it...you get to be as creative as you want to be, can't beat that!

[She can't help but nod, thinking about all of the possibilities; she knwos that Magnus has to see that as well, considering the fact that he's a creative person--his clothes make that statement pretty clearly.] Probably...I'm sure it's a Lightwood trait that was thrown in there. [Izzy shrugs, casually, though, her eyes are on her brother-in-law as he considers her question.]

I guess the fact that you and Alec are together without the baggage here, does make it the best part, but....I can't say I'm surprised by the fact that you've struggled and wondered with the why and all. I have already too, so you're not alone there.

Jyn hates to be beholden to anyone, ever, but she is also never going to say no to free food ever so. It still takes her about a block to answer, but finally her head jerks in a nod.

"Alright." She'd have survived on what she'd eaten at the hospital but if someone wants to be needlessly charitable to her stomach she isn't going to fight it. She tells herself she can accept the kindness of strangers guilt free and simply cut any strings that may be attached when it comes down to it.

"I could stand to eat in that case."

"Friend?" Jyn supplies helpfully, trying to ignore the surge of jealousy that makes her stomach turn over. She succeeds in burying that rebellious emotion because she's gotten real good at ignoring what she feels, frankly, and she doesn't want to think of what that feeling implies.

Heck no.

"He likes to feed people." And if he fed Crowe, he's probably who Nyx mentioned when he walked her home, his friend who was busy prepping for, well, this she supposes.

"Don't you feed him?"

Wow, Jyn, have some manners. It's not her fault though, look at the dog's plaintive face and his floppy little ears and oh Jyn is petting the dog, that happened, and oh those floppy little ears are the softest things she's ever felt in her entire life and is his tail wagging, his tail is wagging. Jyn loves the dog more than she has loved anything in her entire life including food.

It's not like Jyn has been starved from love from a very, very young age but that might actually be the case. Also this dog is a precious angel and must be protected at all costs. Defend the dog.

"Apparently." Cassian had said it and it seemed right to her for some reason so she didn't bother questioning it. She doubts he'd lie about something so mundane and no one has corrected her since so there we have it.

Cupcake.

"How come you can speak telepathically but when you meow it's just a meow?" These are deep thoughts, y'all. She's been in the sun too long.

I came here to talk to [ (yell at) ] one of the doctors. Lucky for you, nothing urgent.

[ Or he wouldn't have stopped to help, is the implication -- but the errand was important, and he did help. His actions don't quite align with his apparent cantankerousness. The rest of what David says earns a knitting of the brow, however. ]

You do not remember? Were you in an accident? Did you hit your head?

[ Like Wanda? Like him? ]

[ David shifts over slightly when she takes a seat, making room. It's weird, having a conversation without speaking. It feels new, though he's having a hard time trusting the idea that anything's actually new. Not when his memory's still a mess.

That said: he knows he isn't from space. There's a strange glimpse of something close, the memory of vast, empty spaces, and cold. And jazz music, which doesn't exactly fit. ]

( I have memories of it. Growing up here. )

[ That's more an observation than it is an answer. He's looking out at the trees, and he draws his focus back to her when he continues; it has a weird effect, eye contact when they're speaking without words, making it feel more intimate. ]

( They said I was in an accident. That I should remember everything, eventually. Right now it's— spotty. )

It's not a picture he likes to envision, but it's easy enough, especially with the way she likes to run off on her own. The fact that she doesn't appear to be injured at all is both not surprising, and relieving both at once.

"You need to be more careful," he says, not quite exasperated, but almost. For some reason, it feels almost foreign to be admonishing Laura this way. He writes it off as hypocrisy; Logan certainly doesn't take care in those types of situations, for himself.

Her second statement causes him to glance around, as if he's looking for something. His voice is lowered, when he says, "They do, yeah. I was in a motorcycle accident last month. Some of my friends were in accidents, too. They don't like us to talk about it, though."

What "they" like, however, is kind of becoming less of a concern, for Logan; especially with two girls to take care of.

Laura, on the other hand, is far less concerned for herself. She fidgets with the edge of the hospital down, first considering his lecturing, and then — then perking a little, interested, feeling like there's something here she needs to dig into. Surely her father feels it, too, that gnawing sensation that they've been cut in places to fit empty jigsaw spaces. She does worry that it's just her, of course she does... but it doesn't change that people act strangely about the accidents. About talking.

"... You crashed first. You're not careful, either."

First, gotta get lecturing you back out of the way. Dad.

"That's not the point. You being careful, is my point."

No, he never wears a helmet, because he literally has a metal skull and it's fine. He's been in accidents before that he's had to take a minute or two to knit from; longer if they've knocked him unconscious. Reckless he might be, but he's not 100% invulnerable. So far, though, he's never encountered anything he hasn't been able to heal from. In Logan's opinion, that gives him the right to not need to be careful.
allfornothing: (Question)

[ Crowe was trying to figure out how to not say that there are, after all, advantages to being an outsider in a big city - not say it because surveillance - when Cassian says that she can try anything, and she just. Stops moving. Eyes wide, more than a little deer-in-the-headlights look. Which Nyx will probably only know is not an immediate sign of danger because of the lack of tension in her primary arm, or the way her teeth are not clenched.

A long moment, as she tries to process what, exactly, is so shocking, other than her getting permission where Nyx was asked to limit himself (and that alone is no small thing), then she ducks her head.
]

Oh, no, if you've spent hours upon hours of making these, I'm not ruining your work.

[ And she reaches for a chocolate chip cookie from the green tray, biting into it so she doesn't have to look for more words. Because words are not coming right, right now.

And her eyebrows shoot up.
]

Thiff iff good...

[ Okay, maybe she shouldn't be surprised because, obviously, he's selling these and they have to be good, but still. (She's also pretty damn hungry.) ]

So that clearly means doing stupid things is entirely safe and A-OK! ¿Sí?

She receives the same flat stare in return. It's almost like they're related or something.

"I know. You still aren't allowed to run into traffic without looking both ways."

Sure, you heal, but you also feel pain. There's no need to put yourself through that just because you're being careless and angry.

She combs over the memories that are slowly, slowly, slowly trickling in.

Some things are lining up. Her name is Laura Howlett, and her father works as a teacher at the school. She remembers the accident — her, running into the road in a fit of anger, hit by a car that was perhaps speeding a little too much in a residential area. She remembers a sister... and that's where she's currently hitting a bit of a mental block.

She rubs her forehead, trying to think harder, but to no avail.

"... He teaches."
shoplifter: (pic#11324651)

[personal profile] shoplifter 2017-05-15 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, alright, she knows. She's not gonna say as much, but the way her expression smooths back out into something less offended certainly shows she's given up the battle there. Though she is so sorely tempted to tell him to wear a helmet just to be on his level; funnily, of everything that is so overwhelmingly confusing and frightening, this is as ordinary and normal as she can feel, she thinks.

But there are uglier things lurking in all of this. Whether it's just in her mind or there's something terrible about all those accidents, she's not sure. But.

"Why can't we talk about it?"

[He whistles lowly. Talk about fresh meat. But he doesn't say that. What he says instead with an abundance of cheerfulness is:]

Niiiice. You got out just in time to switch your pudding cups for homemade desserts. Are you sure your stomach and your wallet are gonna be okay if brave the crowds?

[No, the dude with arms like tree trunks teaching kids how to clean their paintbrushes isn't so bad at all, and Jack's smile isn't nearly as forced when talking about him. Mr. Rogers fits being an art teacher as well as a pro wrestler teaching ballet, and for that Jack is inclined to like him. He's another person who doesn't fit in in this town.]

Yeah, he's a cool dude, he hasn't yelled at me once for falling asleep or drawing stick figures. I don't really get art.

She wasn't the first jogger he'd seen today. It was a little eerie, come to think of it - a little Stepford Wives, a little Twin Peaks. Everything here was just a little bit wrong. She was, however, the first one to stop and talk to him, and with a choice of words that he wouldn't have expected from a suburbanite. Kaulder gave her a quick once-over: on the outside, she looked perfectly normal.

Happens to all of us on our first day.

Definitely something wrong, here, and he latched on to those words like a pit bull, a frown tugging at the corners of his mouth and his brow furrowed in frustrated confusion. He'd been given a speech about working hard and being happy, answering the phone when it rang, but no one had suggested that his case wasn't singular. "What do you mean, 'on our first day'?"
byironandfire: (010)

[personal profile] byironandfire 2017-05-15 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounded like the sort of useless fact Kaulder had acquired somewhere around the line, himself, though he couldn't remember where. All the same, the joke landed, and with a sort of affable self-deprecation, he huffed a soft laugh. "Nah, I'm trying to find my house. It would be a lot easier if bees were involved. The whole homing system, you know?"

How did he know so much about bees? Was he a scientist? Beekeeper? Armchair bee aficionado? Who knew. Kaulder certainly didn't.

Focusing more directly on Clint, he narrowed his eyes in a squint, clearly trying to place where he'd seen the other guy's face before. Was he involved in the car crash that landed Kaulder in this state of almost complete amnesia? If that was the case, maybe he knew what had happened. Was he the other driver, maybe? Hell, or maybe he was just there for routine dialysis, or a colonoscopy. No harm asking, though. "Didn't I see you at the hospital?"

[ pepper imagines they couldn’t get away with holding him hostage in the hospital any longer than they already had, so, despite his condition, he was released. ]

[ that prompts a smile. ] But I’m afraid it doesn’t stop there… our house is bugged, and there are cameras in every room. [ she’s not sure if tony’s going to do anything about them, but she certainly wouldn’t have any objections. ]

Jiaying doesn't like her scars being observed like this, even by a child. But she doesn't let it show, remaining patient with a small smile until Laura speaks again. The question sparks a soft laugh.

"Heavens, no." She brushes a stray hair behind her ear, growing more solemn. "I met a very bad man once upon a time."

He waits, watching her in a manner that is honestly creepy.

"I did. After a week," he says with a shrug. "But I can't talk about it," he adds with a wink.
